an introduction to the
REANSPORT OF OIL
BY SEA
They are the most numerous ships in the world, yet nobody knows they are there. They are as essential to modern industrial life as running water, yet no motorist gives a thought to them as they fill up their tanks with petrol on the garage forecourt. Without them, we would freeze in the dark, yet nobody has much good to say about them or expresses gratitude for the contribution of tankers to fuelling our late 20th Century civilisation.
The tanker fleet comprises some of the world's largest moving objects, and nobody who has ever seen a deep laden Ultra-Large Crude Carrier thrusting along with a bone in her teeth could be unimpressed by the utilitarian effciency of this gigantic, no-nonsense ship. They may not be beautiful- few modern vessels are - but these liquid liners are the ships we depend upon, even though we remain so ignorant of their existence.
Tankers berth in remote deep water terminals miles from the city centre, and no layman ever sees them, or appreciates their cargo handing qualities that will empty their tanks in just a few hours. Then they will be gone, at the top of the tide. The whole set of systems that was set in train to bring this huge ship into port, berth her, empty her, ballast her and get her to sea again may have been taking place on the moon, for all the attention it will rceive.
