GARBAGE MANAGEMENT PLANS
The International Convention for the Prevention of Pollution from Ships(MARPOL 73/78)
covers six categories of marine pollution. Annex V, which entered into force on 31 December 1998, concerns garbage which is defined in the Convention as follows:
'Garbage means all kinds of victual, domestic and operational waste excluding fresh fish and parts thereof, generated during the normal operation of the ship and liable to be disposed of continuously or periodically except those substances which are defined of listed in other Annexes to the present Convention'
Amendments to Annex V of MARPOL 73/78 were adopted in 1995, requiring ships of 400 gross tons and over and all ships certified to carry 15 or more persons to have a Garbage Management Plan and a Garbage Record Book. In addition, the amendments require every ship of 12 metres or more in length to ddisposal of garbage. The new regulations entered into force on 1 july 1997 for new ships, and apply to ships built before that date from 1 july 1998
